The Great Gatsby

The Great Gatsby

Lana Del Ray’s Young and Beautiful mixes with the tunes of 20s. New York City lights mix with the green light outside Daisy’s house. And all together they come to create Gatsby’s dream, his fantasy, his game. A game of light and darkness, of truth, lies and rumors in which Gatsby indulges with one burning desire, one aim to have Daisy back.
When Dicaprio appears in the movie he brings to it all the glamour but also puzzlement of Gatsby’s character. His strong passion to achieve personal happiness with the woman he has been in love with for years makes him determined but also fragile. He fights for her in every possible way acceptable or unacceptable, but for him everything is allowed and everything is possible; even repeating the past.

Nick Carraway: You can’t repeat the past
Gatsby: Can’t repeat the past?
Nick Carraway: No…
Gatsby: Why, of course you can…of course you can.

In the end he is the victim of the façade he has created, defeated by the absurd and scary universe of materialism and decadence.

“They were careless people, Tom and Daisy- they smashed up things and creatures and then retreated back into their money or their vast carelessness or whatever it was that kept them together, and let other people clean up the mess they had made.”

Ch.
