Paris - Haute Couture Fashion week - A contemporary past...

Watching the Haute couture Fashion Shows for Autumn 2013 was as if we were traveling by train back in time. And as soon as we arrived at our destination we saw outside the window the most modern present filled with smells, glamour and luxury from a forgotten time.

The nostalgic trip to the past started with Christian Lacroix designing for Schiapparelli. 18 looks were displayed at Les Arts Décoratifs paying homage to the legendary designer. One of the most characteristic pieces was the pink-and-black striped dress in duchesse satin which best incarnates this collaboration, reminding us of Lacroix’s famous dress for his Haute couture collection 1987-88 and the artistic style of Schiap.

A black coat with huge pockets couldn’t be missing from the collection reinventing Schiaparelli’s Desk Suit and her influence by Dali. As Farida Khelfa , the ambassador of the House, said “ It’s an homage but also a New Look.”

Karl Lagerfield  described his collection as a transition between the Old World and the New World adding that  it has no reference to a special past, it has a reference to the name of Chanel but for another century. As For the connection with Fritz Lang's Metropolis Tim Blanks wrote “The moviemaker and the fashion designer both adept at drawing on the past to create a vision of the future.” Lagerfield also underlined the importance of fashion being International, an idea which is more than obvious to Raf Simons collection for Christian Dior. As Simons has repeatedly mentioned he designs for women, for his clients and this time he is specific…he designs for women all around the world.

Armani Prive and Atelier Versace drew inspiration from Old Hollywood; the first with his 30s hairstyles and a nude glamour the latter with its diamond jewellery and high sex appeal.
Zuhair Murad and Elie Saab presented once again dreamy gowns . Elie Saab’s show closed with a fairy-tale bride taking us back to our childhood princess dreams. In contrast Giabattista Valli’s  white dresses presented a fresher and very girly look. As the designer himself said flowers and colors are what women want from him and that’s what he gives them.
